Most, who say are amongst the very best they have ever tried anywhere around the globe.  Similarly you have to take advantage and try the delicious and fresh natural Fruit Juices that are offered at almost ever restaurant. From known to new, explore the variety of options of authentic Costa Rican Drinks & Juices that are offered seasonally.

Natural drinks and Juices called Refrescos Naturales, Most of the time shortened to “Refrescos”  or “Frescos” are commonly offered throughout the country. With the incredible variety of fruits that grow in the country, the Costa Rican’s take full advantage of the local farmers market. Tasty and refreshing concoctions either with singular fruits or delectable unique combinations according to the fruit purchased at the “Feria” (Farmers Market) that day, you can never go wrong. 

“Sodas” or typical small local restaurants to the bistro’s with higher end cuisine, Everyone takes advantage of the countries bounty to create refreshing natural drinks. You can order them in a several different presentations.  Ask them to be made; “En Agua” (As a water base – The most popular option),  “En Leche” (Milk Base. Think thinner Milkshake) or “Frozen” (Think Tropical Icey).

  1. Cass (Sour Guava or Costa Rican Guava) – (Psidium guajava) With a a Slightly Tart yet refreshing flavor similar to a classic Lemonade,  considered as one of the most popular “Refrescos” ordered by the Ticos and available almost year round.
  2. Guanabana (Soursop. Yes, that’s the name!) – (Annona muricataA Completely white, fleshy Fruit gives a truly unique flavor which translates to a delicious and addictive beverage. Most often served by itself. Be sure to ask for a “Frozen version” for an incredibly refreshing answer to a warm day.
  3. Maracuya (Passion Fruit) – (Passiflora edulis) – Only offered in March – May & August -December. Always a top choice and a Must try. Maracuya is offered in almost every “Soda” or restaurant and often is found mixed with other fruits into a delicious tropical concoction.
  4. Pina (Pineapple) – (Ananas comosus)  Internationally known, Costa Rica has the best pinepples in the world. Often exported to Hawaii and one of the top Exports of the country. The golden pineapple eaten or in juice is an experience!
  5. Carambola (Star Fruit) – (Averrhoa carambola) – Only offered in  August -December, this is one of the rarer varieties due to it’s short season, but a must try if your visiting in the right time of year. A cross between a Pineapple and a Guava.
